Bright corridor in a seniors' residence with wood handrails and blue-grey doors

Commercial services: Healthcare and seniors' residence painting in Ottawa

Clinics, medical offices, long-term care and retirement residences painted around the people who live and work there, with low-odour products and the facility's infection-control rules.

Painting where people are cared for

In a clinic, hospital wing or seniors' residence, the building never really empties. Residents live there, patients still need appointments and staff work around the clock. Painting has to fit around care, not the other way round. We plan the work in small areas, keep corridors and exits passable, and agree the schedule with your facility team before we start.

Infection control comes first

Construction and maintenance work in Canadian healthcare facilities is planned under CSA Z317.13, the standard for infection control during construction, renovation and maintenance. Your infection prevention and control team sets the precautions for each area, based on the work and the people nearby, and we plan our dust control, containment and clean-up to match: from simple dust control in offices and lobbies to sealed-off work areas and controlled access near vulnerable patients.

Low-odour, cleanable finishes

Residents and patients are often more sensitive to paint odour than people in a typical office. We use low-odour, low-VOC products, ventilate the work area, and plan rooms so residents can be out of them while the paint dries.

Healthcare walls are wiped and disinfected constantly, so finishes are chosen to stand up to cleaning: scrubbable eggshell or semi-gloss on walls, harder enamels on doors, frames and handrails, and products checked against the facility's cleaning chemicals.

Colour that helps people find their way

In long-term care and memory care, colour does more than look fresh. Strong contrast between walls and floors, handrails and walls, and doors and frames helps residents with low vision or dementia judge edges and find their way. Many homes give each wing or floor its own colour, or paint residents' doors in a contrasting colour, while staff-only and exit doors are often painted to blend into the wall. We can work from your care team's or designer's scheme.

What we paint

  • Resident suites, patient rooms and washrooms
  • Corridors, lounges, dining rooms and common areas
  • Clinics, exam rooms, waiting rooms and medical offices
  • Nursing stations, staff rooms and back-of-house areas
  • Doors, frames and handrails, including fire-rated doors, without painting over their labels
  • Stairwells, exits and safety markings

Working in occupied buildings

Our crews follow the site's sign-in and identification rules, keep materials and equipment secured and out of reach, and leave every area clean and safe at the end of each shift. You get a written scope and a schedule broken down by area, and one contact to call if a room needs to be moved up or put back.

Healthcare & Seniors' Residences FAQ

Questions we get about this work.

Anything else? Ask us or call and we'll answer straight away.

Can you paint while residents or patients are in the building?

Yes, that is normal for this work. Areas are done in small phases, rooms are painted while residents are out of them, and corridors stay passable.

Do you follow infection-control requirements?

Yes. The facility's infection prevention and control team sets the precautions for each area under CSA Z317.13, and we plan our dust control, containment and clean-up to match.

Is the paint safe for residents?

We use low-odour, low-VOC products and ventilate the work area. Where residents are especially sensitive, rooms are painted while they can be elsewhere until the paint has dried.

Can you work nights or weekends?

Yes, where it suits the facility. Offices, clinics and common areas are often painted after hours.

What finish works best in healthcare spaces?

Finishes that stand up to frequent cleaning: scrubbable eggshell or semi-gloss for walls, and harder enamels for doors, frames and handrails. Products are checked against your cleaning chemicals.

Do you paint private clinics and medical offices?

Yes. Dental and medical offices, physiotherapy clinics and other practices are usually painted after hours or over a weekend so appointments aren't affected.
